Aberystwyth Art Centre, Aberystwyth University, SY23 3DE exhibition runs till 18th June 2023
A group exhibition curated by Heledd Wyn Hardy commemorating the centenary of Wales’ remarkable Women’s Peace Appeal of 1923-24. ‘The Women’s Peace campaign of 1923 was a truly remarkable Wales-wide effort involving almost every household, through peace activists going door-to-door, supported through county and community organisers of ‘the League’. A delegation, led by WLNU Chair Annie Hughes-Griffiths, travelled from Wales to America in March 1924 for a 2 month ‘Peace Tour’ of the States, building support through American women’s organisations involving over 60 million people. ‘
In my work PAX is reflected by the ability to walk freely and alone through a varied natural environment. Many things are occurring to enable this autonomy of action - the person is not subject to a repressive regime, is not fearful of bodily harm from a war zone, is not subject to oppressive gender restrictions… Thankfully within the UK slowly the boundaries of action as simple as walking are opening up to a diverse range of people...
The drawing was made in 2021 - during and just after lockdown - as part of a series of works with Malaysian architect Eu Jin Lim - who was also experiencing lockdown in Kuala Lumpur. It was part of Open Books Online
